When the surf's up at Waimea Bay, it's a big party. The big crowd makes the surf seems trivial. Huge WNW swell pound Oahu's North Shore.

When a strong cold front threatens to swamp the Cape Peninsula, bringing with it the promise of deep groundswell lines and giant peaks, you'll find a group of core and committed big wave surfers who start wringing their hands together and dusting off their big wave rhino chasers. Calls are made to their big wave surfing buddies, guys they can trust to pull them out of the heaviest situations the ocean can throw at them, and decisions are made as to which of their favourite big wave spots are going to be on. Whale Cove is frequented more by the ocean's biggest citizens than by surfers, but when nature calls and the opportunity arises, this group of surfers are quick to answer. By Zigzag Another big blip on the swell models, followed by a frenzy of hype, guns getting pulled from the rafters, skis tuned and gased up and last minute plane tickets being booked. These days, catching a big swell in one place is no longer the norm. Starting in Hawaii to surf Jaws or Waimea followed by a redeye over to Mavericks and possibly ending up at Todos seemed to be the trend for a select few. And for men who ride mountains, this could be the starting point for it all...Waimea Bay.
